Keeping Kindergarteners Engaged in Distance Learning

Our little ones grow fast! From being very dependent on us for every little thing, the next thing you realize is they’re already learning so much at kindergarten. Learning at kindergarten schools develops a child's social, emotional, literacy, and fine motor skills, which they are obligated to build during their lifetime.

Kids do have a short attention span and can easily get stilified. In the new normal of online learning, the Parents and teachers have to come up with a creative way of getting them to listen or follow instructions. Each child also has different skills and potentials which require varying strategies. Some would appreciate learning with visual aids, music, or even hands-on craft. That's the reason we today came up with tips today to engage students in a meaningful way without adding stress.

Offer device-less option- Kids shouldn't be in front of screens the whole day so give them activities like reading books, writing numbers, coloring, puzzle-solving, art and craft,  scrap projects, etc. There are a number of options out there. Select one that needs things they have at home. Another thing you can do as a part of these activities is assign worksheets as homework to keep them engaged.

Keep communicating- Interaction is the key in a student-teacher relation. During the online classes, students miss interacting with their friends and teachers and that is why it is important to keep checking on the students. Interact with them by sending notes, voice messages, or little recorded videos to check-in. These little gestures are really appreciable and fun to do.

Personalized or themed lessons- Students love to see their names in presentations. To keep them interested teachers can use student names wherever they would like while solving math story problems. The lessons can be tailored as per the individual, skills, and interests of each student. This proffers student choices about how to learn based on interests, abilities, and teacher recommendations.

Mindfulness breaks- Mindful brain breaks include mindful breathing, GIFs that typically run three to five minutes and encourage students to move. Students get squirmy after the live class session and these small breaks of music, dance, breathing activate them for the next round of learning.

Use visuals- Our way of experiencing the world is multimodal running from pictures, photographs to video clips; therefore it is natural that the way of processing information and learning also goes in that direction. Visuals lighten the learning atmosphere and can be used as warmers to introduce a lesson or as a constant aid to support online teaching.

And that’s all folks!
